Tips

For effective performance planning, here are some tips to guide employees AND supervisors....
 

Employee 

  • Make sure you have a good understanding of your objectives and how they support the university’s mission and strategic priorities
  • Identify resources that you need to achieve your objectives; be prepared to discuss them with your supervisor
  • Ask your supervisor for feedback
  • Come to the meeting with an open mind and be prepared to receive constructive feedback
  • Be prepared to make changes to your plan as appropriate
  • Be sure to raise questions if you have them
  • Ensure that objectives are S.M.A.R.T.
  • Review core competencies as they will all be rated at the end of the performance year

Supervisor

  • Coach employees as they develop his or her objectives
  • Listen to your employee’s point of view
  • Openly express your point of view
  • Ask clarifying questions. Seek to understand the employee’s objectives
  • Consider special circumstances that may affect objectives
  • Keep the discussion focused on how the employee can contribute to the university’s strategic priorities
  • Look for common ground if you and your employee disagree
  • Ensure that employee’s objectives are S.M.A.R.T.
  • Review core competencies as they will all be rated at the end of the performance year
