Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

On November 22, 2016 a U.S. District Court judge issued a nationwide injunction to postpone the effective date of changes to overtime eligibility under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Wayne State is suspending implementation of all actions to comply with the December 1 FLSA overtime rule changes, until the legal challenge is resolved.
 

What is FLSA?

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the federal wage and hour law administered by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). It impacts employees in both the private and public sectors by establishing minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping and youth employment standards. 

What's New? 

In May, the U.S. Department of Labor revised FLSA regulations that raised the salary threshold for employees that are considered exempt from overtime. This will go into effect on December 1, 2016 and is set to automatically increase every three years. 

Current Salary Threshold: $23,660 > New Salary Threshold: $47,476

 

 

 

 

 

What's Next? 

WSU has formed a committee of leaders across campus to conduct a full analysis and provide recommendations on the steps the University should take to comply with this federal mandate. Stay tuned for more information to be communicated between now and December.
